What are the hazards?
These are some of the hazards you may come into contact with at work.

Coal dust
Coal dust builds up in the lungs over time.

Silica
Created when drilling, blasting, cutting or grinding rock that contains silica.

Diesel engine exhaust
Most mines use diesel vehicles and tools underground. Given the lack of space and fresh air, you may breathe in high levels of diesel fumes.

Radon
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can build up in inadequately ventilated underground mines.

Methane and carbon monoxide
Gases that can build up in underground mines and be dangerous to breathe, particularly where ventilation is poor.
Smoking or vaping harms your lungs
Smoking is the biggest risk factor for lung conditions like COPD and lung cancer.
Vaping also exposes your lungs to harmful chemicals.
Quitting smoking or vaping will help protect your lungs.
Nicotine is addictive, and stopping can be difficult.
